A sample of student writings from past semesters

I already have one submission of a paper critique from the Evolution class (Go Brett!!), but am still waiting for an electronic version of the same (c'mon Brett?!) so I can share it here.

In the meantime, please browse the archives here to see what past students were reading and writing about - it might even inspire you towards your own writing! While this link takes you to the complete subset of student posts, you can also, in the future, pull them all out simply by clicking on the "student post" tag (every post is tagged with some keywords on the bottom, in case you haven't noticed) in the Tag Cloud in the right hand pane here. And the rest of the tags give you some idea of the range of ideas being discussed on this blog.

Have fun!

Blog update in progress

As you may have noticed, I'm changing some things around on this blog, hopefully to make it visually cleaner, and more user-friendly. And that's partly why there hasn't been much new content here for the past week. I will start posting soon - especially if students start submitting their writings! In the meantime, feel free to poke around in this new template, and let me know if something looks strange or broken.

Midterm will be @ Testing Center

This is an administrative note for students taking the BioSc 180 class this spring - if you are not one of them, please ignore this post!

I've decided to use the new Testing Center for the midterm exam scheduled for this week, and will have more specific instructions for you soon. Basically, the exam will be available at the new Center located at Family and Food Science, Room 210, for 3 days, starting on Monday, Feb 25 to Wednesday Feb, 27. Given the logistics of getting everything set up there, I'm pushing back the start of the exam period to Monday instead of this Friday, so you get the weekend to prepare as well (and I suspect none of you mind that!).

We will have regular lecture as scheduled on Friday at noon, so I'll see you then. Meanwhile, you will hear from me electronically with more details on the exam logistics.

New digs for the class blog

Yes, the blog lives, at least until I have shared all the last minute student submissions so you can all enjoy reading them during / after finals week!

So why did I move here? Well, basically, blame Apple! Yes, the makers of my beloved laptop (oh awright... go ahead and snicker, all those of you who were laughing at me as I fumbled with the ugly Dell laptop for my last lecture) have so far overlooked a rather serious flaw in their iWeb application, which I was using to create the lovely old class blog! So when the hard drive crashed last week, one of the files that got corrupted was the iWeb file for the class blog. And wouldn't you know it - this was just when I had made a number of recent updates but had not backed up the disk in some weeks! Well, having recovered most of the other data over the weekend, and cursed and shaken my fists at Apple for not allowing me to easily update the blog without having to recreate most of the old posts, I finally turned to Google's Blogger, which has proved more reliable and robust for my other class blog.

So here we are... and I'm posting the remaining student submissions in this place now. I will also post a running index of all student articles, from both the old and new locations so they are all available through one place. If you've sent me something, but don't see it pop up here, do let me know as I may have lost your email amid all this shuffling around!

Enjoy reading!
