My blog's strange phylogenetic origin in the Carnival of Evolution #20!

Skeptic Wonder has one of the more creative analytical takes on hosting a blog carnival I've ever seen - an actually phylogeny of the blog posts included in the carnival, based on sequence alignment of each blog post's URL! I'm not sure about some of the results, however... check out where my post on the challenges of teaching evolution ended up in the above tree! How on earth did I end up paraphylizing (if that's a word) Bjørn Østman's blog?!
But, never mind that, this 20th edition of the Carnival of Evolution has plenty of good stuff to read, so head on over there in your spare moments. And pardon my tardiness in bringing this to your attention.

Scientia Pro Publica #18 is out for your holiday reading
Enjoy your break with some good science readings from the blogosphere in the latest Scientia Pro Publica (issue #18) blog carnival. I posted it yesterday on Reconciliation Ecology, so pop on over there if you haven't seen it already!
And if you have come across any good blog writing on evolution, or written something yourself, consider submitting it to the upcoming Carnival of Evolution, #19 to be hosted at Observations of a Nerd.

Carnivals new and old
It seems a new forthnightly carnival focused on evolution has been going around for the past month, and I only just noticed. Well, you can start by reading The Carnival of Evolution #3 at Greg Laden's blog.
And, btw, the venerable Tangled Bank is also online in its 115th incarnation at Evolved and Rational. Check it out.
And students, don't tell me you can't find inspiration to write something about evolution here!

Post Labor Day Carnivals!
If you are looking for some good evolutionary reading material as you continue readjusting to the start of the new school year, head on over to En Tequila es Verdad for the Labor Day edition of the The Tangled Bank. Some interesting links there, including one to my own post on magnetic cows. And you can find the earlier summer editions of this carnival by clicking on the badge to the right.
Sycamore Canyon has the artsy-fartsy 82nd edtion of I and the Bird, following up on Seabrooke's art gallery approach to showcase the 81st edition.
Let me also, belatedly, note that while I was away on the road trip to Oregon, the 18th edition of Oekologie was hosted by Seeds Aside. Oekologie is yet to find the next ring-master, however, so I'm a bit concerned about its future. If it hadn't been the start of a new semester, I might have hosted it again - but I hope someone else steps up, and soon, for I'm sure you'll find this carnival worthwhile too.
And don't miss the 2nd edition of the Giant's Shoulder, the new monthly event focusing entirely on classic papers in science, hosted by the Lay Scientist.
Now even this little sampling of the many blog carnivals featuring biology should keep you happily occupied and out of trouble for some time! And the next editions of these excellent carnivals will be here pretty soon as well (and I'll try to keep you posted on those intermittently as always), although by that time you might well be distracted by Spore!! If so, happy evolving - and don't forget to let me know how well the game's mechanisms of evolution correspond to what has been documented in the real world.

Carnivalia: Oekologie and The Giant's Shoulders
The summer 2008 double issue of the Oekologie blog carnival is up on my other blog. Enjoy reading!
And a brand new heavy-weight carnival has begun with the first edition of The Giant's Shoulders hosted at A Blog Around the Clock. This new monthly carnival is definitely one to keep your eyes on because it is focused entirely on blog posts about classic papers!

Tangled Bank #108 and other summer carnivals
Over at Wheat-dogg’s world, John Wheaton has the latest edition of the The Tangled Bank #108 for your web browsing pleasure.
Great Auk - or Greatest Auk has the 77th edtion of I and the Bird.
Meanwhile, Bora has issued call for submissions to a new monthly blog carnival The Giant's Shoulders focusing on classic papers. The first edition is scheduled for July 16, a day after my own debut as blog carnival host for Oekologie, the current edition of which is still delayed - so if you have anything to contribute there, please send them to me!

A tangled bank on a South Pacific atoll...
... with a nice map and trail guide put together by Syffolee - yes, its the 107th edition of Tangled Bank, up for your reading pleasure!
And while on the subject, I might as well mention (although it is way to early) that my other blog Reconciliation Ecology is now on the list of future hosts for the Tangled Bank - we'll be kicking off the new year 2009 there!
